Radar Fails in Memphis - Flights Rerouted by Cell Phone

Now that’s a scary headline.

I heard about it as soon as I got home (just a bit ago) and, sure enough, CNN had covered the story.

Of course, Fed EX headquarters lie here in the hub city. I remember one time a friend from out of country saying, “Wow! Memphis has an international airport??” To which I could only reply, “Do you get your Fed Ex packages or do they come by fairy?”

Apparently, the malfunction occurred because of some faulty telephone wiring. I’ll be the first to admit that I know little about Air Traffic Control, so I have no idea how or why it happened only that I’m glad I wasn’t flying out today. Sheesh.

Movie Filming in Memphis: Nothing But The Truth

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding an upcoming film production here in the Mid-South.

According to The Commercial Appeal, the film titled, “Nothing But the Truth,” a film based on CIA agent Valerie Plume and the CIA Leak involving New York Times reporter Judith Miller, will be filming here in Memphis. The film is set to star Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, Van Helsing) and Matt Dillon (you know, Matt Dillon?).

Having worked on films in Memphis before, I know that things happen very quickly. So far, I’ve not heard about any extras casting or crew jobs, but according to The Commercial Appeal, the production company hopes to hire mostly local crew. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear more news.

Jim Henson Exhibit in Arkansas

If you’re of a mind to travel a bit further west, you can catch a really cool exhibit at the Arkansas Arts Center. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World will be debuting in Arkansas and will be showcased at the venue until November 25th.

This would make a great day trip for anyone in the Memphis area and looks like it’s going to be as close as the exhibition will come.

You can find out more about the exhibition at The Arkansas Arts Center: Jim Henson’s Fantastic World Exhibit page.

Homicide Rate Rises to 109 in Memphis

As of Saturday, September 2nd, the homicide rate in Memphis has risen to 109 victims.

With a mayoral election around the corner, this is the hot topic among the candidates. There’s lots of talk, but no action, it seems. If I were to be cheesy (I am) and completely predictable (Why not?) since this is Memphis - I would say that there needs to be a “A little less conversation and a little more action, please.” Oh God. I said it.

Memphis has had it rough this year. Crime (but that’s not really anything new), scandal and the oppressive heat wave that has claimed a ridiculous amount of lives.

I’d be curious to know what the citizens of Memphis think should be done to tone down the incessant crime wave that sweeps the Mid-South. Leave me a comment with your ideas. Sure, it’s more talking, but there’s always that chance that someone might be listening.
