I’m currently sitting here listening to the local coverage of University of Memphis’ Athlete, Taylor Bradford’s, death. Currently, the local authorities aren’t releasing any information to the local news outlets as they have no available information about the perpetrator. When asked by a local news reporter from News Channel 3, authorities said that had they had any information about the one behind the shooting, they would have already released the information. As it is, they can only confirm - somewhat - that the shooter was male. As of now, however, they have no other leads on the shooter.

According to an Associated Press article, the shooting occured near a university housing complex around 9:45 p.m, as Bradford was driving a vehicle. After being shot, Bradford then crashed the car into a nearby tree on campus. After Bradford was found, an ambulance took him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Classes have been canceled for the day at University of Memphis as investigators further investigate the shooting. An email sent to students on campus indicated that, while no information was being leaked to the press specifically, investigators felt that the incident was personal and “not a random act of violence.”

Of course, Fed EX headquarters lie here in the hub city. I remember one time a friend from out of country saying, “Wow! Memphis has an international airport??” To which I could only reply, “Do you get your Fed Ex packages or do they come by fairy?”

Apparently, the malfunction occurred because of some faulty telephone wiring. I’ll be the first to admit that I know little about Air Traffic Control, so I have no idea how or why it happened only that I’m glad I wasn’t flying out today. Sheesh.

According to The Commercial Appeal, the film titled, “Nothing But the Truth,” a film based on CIA agent Valerie Plume and the CIA Leak involving New York Times reporter Judith Miller, will be filming here in Memphis. The film is set to star Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, Van Helsing) and Matt Dillon (you know, Matt Dillon?).

Having worked on films in Memphis before, I know that things happen very quickly. So far, I’ve not heard about any extras casting or crew jobs, but according to The Commercial Appeal, the production company hopes to hire mostly local crew. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear more news.

With a mayoral election around the corner, this is the hot topic among the candidates. There’s lots of talk, but no action, it seems. If I were to be cheesy (I am) and completely predictable (Why not?) since this is Memphis - I would say that there needs to be a “A little less conversation and a little more action, please.” Oh God. I said it.

Memphis has had it rough this year. Crime (but that’s not really anything new), scandal and the oppressive heat wave that has claimed a ridiculous amount of lives.

I’d be curious to know what the citizens of Memphis think should be done to tone down the incessant crime wave that sweeps the Mid-South. Leave me a comment with your ideas. Sure, it’s more talking, but there’s always that chance that someone might be listening.

Earlier this week, the bridge was closed. At first, I was certain this was because they were attempting to quickly construct a toll booth overnight. Yeah, that’s a joke. Kinda.

Actually, it was because, according to officials, one of the piers that supports the bridge had settled four inches overnight.

Wait, huh? Is that supposed to happen? I have to go over that bridge nearly everyday. Now you’re telling me the thing just moves when it gets the notion?

So, the bridge was closed and we’re supposed to be okay with the fact that there was construction one day and everything’s okay now. After the bridge collapse tragedy, this is not funny, sweets.

Phew.

This week has been a madhouse for those in Memphis. Take a look around and you might just spot a car with “Memphis Bound: We Love Elvis” written on the back windshield.

As promised, I did get some of the madness on film. I have to say though - for the most part - I was exceptionally pleased with those who attended the festivities. Some of the nicest, most talkative, lovely people came here to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of all things Elvis. We (we being Memphis) garnered a ton of national publicity and I’m sure those of you around the world at least heard something about us. For this, I can’t complain. Memphis tends to get a lot of bad publicity and a little good publicity that might generate more business and tourism is always a good thing.

For those of you that are returning home to your home cities, states and countries, I do hope you enjoyed your time here. I met a number of you from all over the world. Italy, England, Scotland, Japan. I was thrilled that so many of you seemed to be enjoying your time spent here despite the oppressive heat. I hope that you’ll return again and enjoy it just as much as you did this time around.
